If you’ve recently hatched peachicks or guinea fowl, one of the most important questions you’ll ask is “What should I feed them?”
The answer is simple – a high-protein medicated game bird feed.
At Peacocks UK, we’ve been breeding peafowl for over 20 years and have helped thousands of customers successfully rear healthy, thriving peachicks. Time and time again, we’ve found that correct feeding is the single biggest factor in reducing losses and producing strong, healthy birds.
What Do Peachicks Eat?
Newly hatched peachicks should never be fed ordinary chicken chick crumb.
Instead, they need a specialist medicated game bird feed with a much higher protein level to support their rapid growth and developing immune system.
We recommend the following feeding programme:
From Hatching to 2 Weeks
Feed Super Fine Game Chick Crumb.
This fine-textured feed is ideal for tiny peachicks and provides everything they need to get off to the best possible start.
From 2 to 6 Weeks
Gradually introduce Game Chick Crumb.
Mix the two feeds together over several days until the chicks are eating Game Chick Crumb on its own. A gradual change helps prevent digestive upset.
From 6 Weeks Onwards
Move onto Early Game Grower Mini Pellets.
These pellets continue to provide the protein and nutrients your growing peachicks need.
Why Chicken Chick Crumb Is the Wrong Choice
One of the most common questions we receive is:
“Can I feed peachicks on chicken chick crumb?”
The answer is no.
Although chicken chick crumb is widely available, it is designed for chickens, not peafowl or guinea fowl.
The protein level is far too low for these specialist game birds.
Unfortunately, feeding chicken chick crumb can lead to:
- Poor growth
- Weak birds
- Increased illness
- A significantly higher mortality rate
Saving a few pounds on feed can end up costing far more if you lose birds that could have thrived on the correct diet.
Should I Give Peachicks Treats?
No—not during the first few weeks.
Peachicks have an immature digestive system, and introducing treats or additional foods too early can cause problems.
Avoid feeding:
- Mealworms
- Lettuce
- Mixed corn
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Kitchen scraps
For the first eight weeks, stick to a quality medicated game feed and ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
Once your peachicks reach around two months old, you can gradually introduce additional foods alongside their normal feed.
Why We Recommend Medicated Feed
Peachicks are not particularly robust during their first few weeks of life.
Using a medicated game bird feed gives them valuable protection while their immune system develops.
Combined with clean housing, dry bedding, fresh water and good hygiene, medicated feed gives young birds the best possible chance of surviving and thriving.
What About Guinea Fowl Keets?
Guinea fowl keets have very similar nutritional requirements to peachicks.
They also need a high-protein medicated game bird feed and should never be reared on standard chicken chick crumb.
Following the same feeding programme helps produce healthy, fast-growing guinea fowl.
